Can a USB be configured as a boot disk?

Product : Maxtor One Touch III external hard drive.

Maxtor tells me that it is "...impossible..." to configure any USB device as a boot device under Windows XP.

Is that correct or is there a workaround?

it depends on the bios of your mobo - if it allows it then yes

Should add that the implication is that if booting can be achieve using a USB pen drive then other USB devices should also work.
