Formatting the hard drive would do it, Doire_Bhoy, but I'm sure you know that, so what are the full circumstances, are you dual booting with another OS for example? A little more background to the problem would help.

I have an old 98 machine im messing about with and was going to put 2000 on it. If it grind to a halt i was going to uninstall 2000...but i have heard it cant be done.

Are you going to dual boot Win 2000 with Win 98, or are you going to wipe Win 98 and install Win 2000? If the former, you're going to have to create another partition on the hard drive (from the free space) and install Win 2000 on that new partition. If the latter, just wipe Win 98 and boot from the Win 2000 CD to install it, you can remove it later by formatting the hard drive again. If you're just messing around and dual booting, make the Win 2000 partition FAT32 so that it can be seen from within Win 98.

If i have 98 and upgrade to 2000, then decide i dont want 2000 will the PC let me format the drive and wipe 2000?
I thought you cant just format the OS from a PC as it wont let you?????

You can format a drive with the OS installed. But you need to do it using a "Win98 Startup Disk"

You can unistall Windows 2000 and replace it with Windows 98, click here for more information

I would think that installing win2k onto a clean disk would be the best option; it does need good drivers though to avoid all sorts of "stop" errors and BSODs.

When installed and running nicely though, it is a pleasure to use.
