Can partitioning boost performance?

A friend of mine has partitioned his internal hard drive so that he has a 3 partitions. It is partitioned in to three categories: -

1) Windows and System Files
2) Software and Applications
3) Music/Movies & Downloads

My question therefore is this, does such a setup actually pose any benefits? For example, would I expect to receive any benefits in performance?

I cannot see the advantage, in terms of performance or anything else, of partitioning a modern hard drive.

Agreed.
