i am trying to install win 98 on an old pc when i get to a prompt on start up disk i write E:\set up .but i get an error message cdr101 not ready reading drive e .can anybody help

Try E:\dir and see if the cdrom is actually reading the disk, the other thought I have is that the cdrom itself may be at fault. If I recall correctly you have to go into the win98 directory first before you type setup

If you receive the message: "CDR101 - not ready reading drive D:", please:
a) Make sure there are no scratches/smudges on non-label side of CD.
b) Check the physical connections between the CD player and PC.
c) Reboot the PC and reset your CD player.
d) Try to read a directory of the CD

Roland - What drive letter has your CD been allocated?

  rolandrat 20:50 18 May 03

the drive letter is e

Roland - As Paperman says, just type E then hit Enter, then type SETUP and hit enter, it should go into the Win 98 setup phase. If not may I suggest swapping the CD drive for one you know to be good, the present one may be U/S.
