Can malware jump from an external drive?

I have a USB drive I used with my now defunct PC which ran XP. I am not certain it has malware on it, but it may have been infected before the old PC died. If I plug it into the new PC which is running Windows 7 and McAfee, is there a chance it could infect it before I can format the external drive for reuse? I realise not knowing what may be lurking on it makes this difficult to answer, but I have no way to check.

If you are going to format the drive immediately, there shouldn't be a problem because you won't be opening/running any files from the drive.
