CAN I USE SPARE SATA PORTS TO INSTALL A DVD WRITER

I have a DELL 9150 bought Dec 05 and it has 4 sata ports 2 used for HDD's. I need a new dvd writer and I have ordered one that has sata connections however on reading the manual it says "connect cd/dvd drives to ide cable" But as that was back in 05 can I assume the sata can now be used! It may have meant the motherboard was made for RAID hdd's so I may be scuppered.

A quick answer would get me sorted. All the dvd writers I looked at were sata.

Sata is just a type of IDE the same as Pata is or more properly Eide, Different data and power cables.
