The time has come to really clean my computer and I am wondering if I can use the original XP discs ?
They were prior to Service Update 2.
If I format the hard drive can I start again? If I can, will Microsoft up-date detect the old dated discs and load upto current levels?

My machine has all the latest up-dates but has picked up a problem or 2.

Any help would be good

If your XP disc includes SP1 or SP1a, you can download SP3 and install it as soon as Windows itself has finished installing. If not, you'll need to install SP1 first. There are still a fair few updates that will need to be fetched after SP3 but you can let Windows Updates manage that.

If you look up "Slipstream XP" in Google it'll tell you how to build a "new" XP disk that includes all the service packs.

I've used click here to go to XP SP2 and either

or

to go to XP SP3.... not sure which

If you reformat you will need all the Drivers for your PC and it may throw up more errors Best way is Repair if you have a Full XP CD.

PS if you want to get rid of old programs do not simply delete these, You should go the correct way and remove from Add Remove Programs in Control Panel. Deleting is a last resort
