Can I share ext HDD on a network?

Hi there. I have a small home network already set up. Is it possible to access the files on an external hard drive connected to main computer(PC1) from another computer connected to this network? If so, what address details do I enter to locate the external drive ie \\PC1\EXT HDD\docs. Thanks in advance.

Yes, you can. The "shared" external drive will be accessible over the network in the same way as an internal drive. The format of the address path you quoted should be fine.

I've tried to locate the Ext HDD by typing the path \\home\j\music files where 'home' is where the Ext HDD 'j' is connected to and 'music files' is the folder I want to share. I've also varied the path name adding a colon: after the 'j' but no luck so far. Any ideas?

I've managed to get it working. The mistake I was making was to include the path name of my Ext HDD. I typed in \\home\music files to locate the folder and it saw it straight away. Starting to understand the very basics of networking now.
