Can I open a .GFT file?

  john bunyan 18:19 12 Dec 11

I have been sent a family tree in .gft format. I only have Photoshop, Word etc. Is there a way of opening it - or could the originator convert it at source?

Get it re-sent in a format you can open.

Yes, but I do not know how the sender could do that. Have asked him.

Without a family tree program then you will find it difficult to open. gft is used by GSP Family Tree. The usual way to distribute trees is by gedcom but again you would need an appropriate program. I have a more sophisticated family history program and export a tree as html for opening in a browser for those without a family history program. I do not know if Family Tree can do this.

I hope that viewer works.

See if he can export it as a pdf file.

*wiz-king, Woolwell.*Thanks for suggestions. The Mud Creek software would not open it. I will ask if he could send it as a .pdf. I have been thinking of buying a family tree software - do not mind paying. Any suggestions as to a reasonably future - proof or most popular one? Ihave W7 .

This company is good TWR Computing. It depends on how much family history work you will do. You cannot go far wrong with Family Tree Maker which is Ancestry's product. I have tried several and ditched 2 or 3 (imo you get what you pay for). I now use Family Historian which I think is the best but it is a bit more complicated and possibly over the top for most. But I have delved back several generations with more than one line. It can take up a lot of time and unless you visit public record offices, etc, look at the Free BMD website then you may need a subscription to Ancestry or findmypast to look at the censuses.

BTW most family history programs will not open a gft file. The normal way is to exchanged gedcom files.
