can i fit 2 ethernet cards

in the same pc 1 for my ntl broadband and the other to connect 2 pc's together with a cross over cable to transfere data, or would this cause a conflict

There wouldn't be any conflicts - these are two different network connections and they can work side by side.

For not much more than the price of a second network card you could get a simple router so that both computers can access the internet independently as well as transfer data.

when I was on ntl I had 2 nics in the pc 1 for the ntl connection and the other for the crossover cable. This worked very well.

i'd do as felix says, that way your main PC won't need to be on for the other two to work

get a modem/router/4 port switch, and do it all through that, they only cost about £30 or so for a cheap one, £50 for a decent home user one
