Can anyone help with an IE6 problem?

Everytime he logs on to the internet (Win 98SE and Onetel Broadband) he gets an error message:

Microsoft Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close.

with the usual “Do you want to send this to Microsoft” etc. He always selects “Don’t Send” and IE closes but he his still connected to the internet.

If he then opens IE again his home page comes up and he can switch to Mail, Read Mail and his Inbox is there. After a few seconds the same error message comes up and so on and so on.

He has been given the MS Knowledge base URL but can’t access it because this error message just keeps coming up and closing IE.

He has tried IE repair and sfc but it has made no difference and has also tried putting it back to the option to return to the last IE he had (IE5.5) and although it appeared to have done and restarted the PC it still shows as IE6 and the problem is still.

He does have a Laptop with Onetel BB and IE6 but with Win XP and that is working fine.

I won’t see him again until January 13th next year so I have told him to just use his laptop for accessing the web until then. He lives 20 miles away but I can always ring him if anyone has the solution. Thanks everyone.

To work around this problem, disable script debugging in Internet Explorer. This procedure is recommended for Windows 98 and Windows Millennium Edition only. To resolve this problem on other operating systems, apply one of the upgrades that are listed in the Resolution section of this article. To disable script debugging, follow these steps: 1. Start Internet Explorer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
3. On the Advanced tab, click to select the Disable Script Debugging check box in the Browsing section.
4. Click OK, and then restart Windows.

Has he tried deleting Internet Explorer totally and then restarting and reinstalling it from scratch? As another possible solution he could try removing his Onetel BB setup and reinstall it from scratch to hopefully restore any setting that may have been altered or become corrupt. May not help, but worth a try perhaps.

BH34, unfortunately he can't stay on IE long enough to get to Tools. The error message comes up and then closes IE back to the desktop.

Totally-braindead, Thanks for the suggestion but that was the first thing we did this morning.

I am of the opinion that he needs to do a complete reformat of his hard disk and re-install from scratch, that's the only thing he has not done yet. Fortunately, he has back up CDs of his files and he also seems to have all the install CDs that came with his computer. (except that the Win 98SE CD is IE5) but at least it is something.

Gives him something to do over the Christmas Holiday period.

Probably safer not to use IE at all, and convert to Opera or Firefox. Long term, he'd avoid most viruses doing the rounds.

Has he run a thorough virus check and spyware check this time?
