When I copy my camcorder through Sony movie shaker software onto a cd it will not play on my dvd player. I copied to a cd and not DVD disk. It plays on the laptop ok.

Is it a standalone DVD player connected to the TV or a DVD drive in your computer?
It could be if its a standalone one that it won't read CDRs or perhaps just doesn't like that particular brand of CD.

Old DVD player? Probably. Either won't play burned CD's/DVDs or it wont play CDs.

It's a sony, it says it should play all, may be I copied it wrong, it plays in the laptop ok

Have you finalised the CD?

Finalised it, didn't see that option ?

I think Fellsider might have it. A friend of mine tried a DVD he had made on his father in laws standalone DVD player and it wouldn't play though it would play on his stand alone DVD recorder. He took the DVD home again, worked out how to finalise it and now it plays in everything.

I don't know about the Sony software that you are using so can't advise but no doubt it will have instructions (probably online or as a pdf), see what that says about finalising.

If you burnt it on the laptop then it will play on the laptop without finalising, but if you want to play on anything else you will have to finalise it.
