Recommendations required.

I have a small budget here at work for a camcorder of £400, I would be gratefull for any recommendations.

Cannot recommend, but I use a Digital JVC D50 with mini tape. A very good camera to me. It also can take still photos and record them to tape. Is is a older model. Most now are running on memory cards but you need to take care that they will support a big card, also that they can use "asf and avi" format. asf is a compressed so it can finish up blocky depending on settings of the camera and optical zoom

Very complicated there are various formats and depending what you wish to achieve editing wise etc., it would pay you to look at this forum and search you'll find several asking similar question and of course you can ask your self try and build up an idea of your needs will make it easier to find what you are after
Good luck
