My machine's 2 hard drives both worked fast when the operating system was Win 98SE. Both are on the same IDE cable.
Since I did a new full installation of XP Pro I notice that the C drive is running considerably slower than D as the following bench marks confim, C is using NTFS and D Fat32:

Device Manager report the following for IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers:

Primary ide channel properties (advanced settings)
Device 0
Device Type Auto Detection (greyed out)
Transfer Mode DMA if available
Currant transfer mode PIO Mode
Device 1
Device Type Auto Detection (greyed out)
Transfer Mode DMA if available
Currant transfer mode Ultra DMA Mode 5

Secondary ide channel properties (advanced settings)
Device 0
Device type Auto Detection (greyed out)
Transfer mode DMA if available
Currant Transfer Mode Ultra DMA Mode 2

Device1
Device type Auto Detection (greyed out)
Transfer Mode PIO Only
Currant Transfer Mode PIO Mode

SiS PCI IDE Controller Properties
Driver detals C:\WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\atapi.sys
C:\WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\pciide.sys
C:\WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\pcidex.sys

I have removed from Device Manager both Primary and Secondary IDE chanels and also the SiS PCI Controller, rebooted but the problem remains. I can't find an updated driver for the IDE from ECS or SiS, it seems XPs supplied drivers are the only ones used.

System details are:
Mainboard - K7S5A by ECS
BIOS American Megatrends Inc
Chipset SiS735 CPU to PCI Bridge
Processor AMD Athlon @ 1400 Mhz
Physical Memory 512 Mb

I've tried removing from the machine drive D to see if it was conflicting in any way, this did not resolve the problem

Anyone seen this problem before and can remember a fix - PLEASE.

Thanks
