Buying seconhand, beware files already there.

I bought a secondhand machine for internet use in France. On this site one day and read about someone finding loads of jpeg files on their machine that they weren't aware of. Always one for a tinker I did a search on mine and it threw up hundreds of jpeg files from previous owner, 99% porn. Wiped them but wondered if there are any other file formats that are used for this "trade". The thing that worried me was suppose it was really nasty stuff and someone else saw them and reported me to the authorities. I could be tarred with a very undeserved brush.

Always best to format the drive of a second hand machine and do a clean intallation of the operating system and software. Rules out any problems such as "unwanted" files.

I would change the hard drive as that is the only way you would be guaranteed to clear out this kind of stuff.
