Hi, im about to reinstall Xp on a new hard drive for my friend who's h.d let him down recently. His desktop pc has an xp licence on the side of it and a very very nice man on this forum has sent me a copy of his Windows Xp home cd that should be here soon so i can reinstall it, what i want to know is is this h.d ok to use? (it is the one priced £41.99 and is 500gb)

I have chose a Samsung purely as the previous h.d was a Samsung, although the previous h.d was 240gb i think.
Im unfamiliar with what 'Sata 2' is and if this will be satisfactory in my friends pc.
Please give me any advice you can!
Thank you.

Is this same machine as click here you said your brother?

What is the PC make/model?

what drive does it have now? IDE PATA or SATA?

SATA2 drives will revert to SATA1 speed if the motherboard only has a SATA1 controller.

Sorry Fruit Bat, yes it is the same thread but i didn't seem to be getting any answers about if the h.d was ok or not you see, many apologies for that!

The sticker on the h.d reads: 'Samsung HD160JJ/P'
The pc is aCompaq Presario SR200
How do i tell if it is Pata or Sata please?

Samsung HD160JJ/P is a 160G SATA2 drive.

PATA (EIDE), SATA differences click here

Yes

Personally I would buy a Western digital or Seagate rather than a Samsung.

The only reason i was going to go for a Samsung is because the last h.d was a Samsung you see. Someone on another thread recommended this...
