Buying a new gaming PC

Hi, i have saved for a year and a half and have finally scraped together £2000 to spend on a new gaming PC.

Only problem is, i don't know which.

I've been looking at Alienware, Voodoo, etc (all the usuals) as well as Dell XPS systems.

I just really need some help in what direction to head in.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Obviously i'd want the maximum possible gaming performance i could obtain with £2000, so please keep my budget in mind :) It means a lot which system i get, because i've been saving for so long.

Suggestions of desktops and even laptops would be great.

Thanks a lot,
John.

Thanks so much for all the replies, it's been a great help.

Just had a look at Cougar systems which was suggested in this thread and put together a system that came to around £2000.

What do you guys think?

- Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 2.83 Ghz 12Mb Cach,

- 4GB Kingston DDR2 667 - 2 x 2GB single modules,

- 500GB SATA Hard Drive,

- 200GB Secondary SATA HDD,

- PC-P60B Aluminium Black Case ,

- Tagan 1300w ,

- 2 x GeForce GTX 280 1024MB GDDR3,

- QCE - Asus P5NE32-E SLI 1333FSB,

- DVD+/- RW - 18X Samsung Lightscribe,

- No Floppy Disk Drive, No Monitor,

- Keyboard & Mouse Set Black and Silver,

- Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 4 PCI 7.1,

- Intergrated Monitor Speakers,

- Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic (OEM),

- MS Office 2007 Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Outlook no media,

The motherboard always confuses me. Can you tell me if the QCE means it's compatible with the Intel Core 2 Quad?

Definitely going to take a look at the other sites you guys have suggested.

Thanks again,
John.

probaby means the board can can take a quad core extreme cpu. whatever board you get go for the fastest ram it can have. a large case is best as gtx280 and 4870x2 need good airflow to keep them cool.

Qhad Core 9450 will save a bit of money and can be given a modest overclock to give the same performance as the Q9550.

I would be looking for at least 800MHz RAM and 1066MHz or faster if the motherboard can support it.

Samsung F1 drives are getting great reviews for performance if not reliability, although my 2 two month old ones are fine.

Nice case and probably good airflow but possibly noisy with the front mounted fans, you may not mind this.

1300W PSU is probably overkill, each GTX280 draws about 236W. 700-900W should be OK.

The cheaper motherboards at Cougar are fine but older technology hence typically supporting 800MHz RAM max. They do have pricier more up to date options.

I would be tempted with a single card, perhaps the HD4870, possibly a HD4870X2 if you're using a 24" or above monitor or multiple monitors.

Just noticed you'd specified Vista Home Basic, Premium would be better.

I hope this is ok to ask within your post.
When you use a 1000w power unit - does it give out heat similar to a 1kw fire?
