burning device "disappeared"

i am sure that my plextor removable burner is plugged in correctely but ive been trying to copy some data but cant find the hardware .normally when i try to copy something the option to burn to cd/r comes up automatically ,i cant even find its hardware when i choose my computer .i use windows XP.

If its Internal then make sure it is detected in the BIOS. Press delete as your computer is starting and see if it detects the drive.

If its External remove all traces of the drive and reconnect and reinstall.

Also run Add hardware from the control panel.

Go into the Device Manager and see if it is listed and right click and hit unistall...Reboot the computer and let windows detect it.
