burning CD's and WMA file sizes

I am trying to produce music cds using windows media audio files instead of mp3 as my hifi does nor play mp3. The file sizes seem great for the job.

But when I drag and drop into the burning software the files expand to their original Wave Fike size, which means I am stuck with a limited number of tracks per cd as before.

Why does this happen and is there any way around?

Many thanks
