I want to build my own computer- i have a screen, keyboard, and mouse, so i only need the tower. I have a 3 and a half floppy drive, 52x CD Drive, 5gb hard drive with windows ME on and Microsoft Office 2000, a modem and 64mb of SDram. Can anyone advise me on what to get next? i dont want a top of the range computer, but would like one around 1.8ghz.

i have the first issue, and i am on a really tight budget as i would not be able to afford the £1000 they had. But do you have any advise on what to get? this is the first time i have attempted this but i believe i am ready for it- though if i told you how old i am- you would tell me to stay away- im 14. But i am very smart for my age- and believe i can do it. Any advise?

if you give more info ie are you wanting to go the intel or amd way , amd cheaper - good value , do u want graphics card etc , post how much ur willing 2 spend and i can advise

i am willing to spend about £300 and i would definatly go the AMD way- my parents have i 1.2ghz amd athlon and i would like a graphics card and sound card but it is not essential. i think i need a CD-RW, and a processor around 1.3ghz.

i may be able to go up around £75 if needed

motherboard - MSI KT4V @ £60
AMD Athlon xp1700+ heatsink + fan @ £70
Aopen cdrw 48x12x50x @ £35
gforce 4 ti4200 64mb @ £100

now that totals only £265 so if u can id advise getting some more memory , if u go for pc2100/266
youll want at least 128mb and definately 256 when you can , but the moboard has 3 memory slots.
also with that board u wont need soundcard as it already supports 5.1
whilst the processor isnt 1.8ghz it runs at 1.456ghz but trust me if u get the rest of the kit u wont notice.

just seen the extra £75 u can get an amd xp2400+ for £100 , and u wont need to upgrade for years , ive been running the above kit but with 768mb ddr266 and its lightning , can push any game 2 standards of xbox and anything else youll want it for . i can encode avi 2 mpeg , download files and watch a dvd all at same time with no noticable slow down
