Is it possible to build one using old pc and a new large harddrive?

What software should I need for running it?

Thanks

forgive me if Im misunderstanding your question but purely for storage ? why not just burn to Cdr ? a cheaper option maybe.& less likely to have incompataiblity problems

Actually, I have 15 computers in network at work so I thought it would be easier to back up files from all computers to one NAS (Word Documents, etc) rather than backing up one by one computer. Yes, it is purely for storage.
