Buffer overrun detected! - help

  Muckle 12:42 09 Sep 04

When I try to open internet explorer, My Documents, My Computer and probably lots of other things I get an error message with a title Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Buffer overrun detected!
Program: C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe
A buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the program's internal state. The program cannot safely continue execution and must now be terminated.
Nothing seems to work - any ideas please?

Still not sorted, but now found out it only occurs when network cable is plugged in!
Any suggestions?

Which version of Windows?

Win 2000 on a PC that connects to a workgroup and the internet by LAN.
Other PCs with the same setup still work Ok and I can't figure out what has changed on this one.
P.S. it is in a learning centre with no onsite IT support (except me and I don't know very much!!)
