BT Voyager 2110 wireless connection lost

After many months without trouble, the connection between my Apple MacBook 10.4 and BT Voyager 2110 modem has been lost. When I go to System Preferences and open Network, I get a pop-up message saying: "Your network settings have been changed by another application" with an OK button. If I click on the button, the message just reappears and blocks me from getting in to the settings page. i have no idea what the application referred to could be. I have tried disconnecting the router for several hours. Connection to the modem with a cable is unaffected.

My knowledge of these matters is minimal, so please take that into account if you have a solution to offer
