BT - Lower ping rates??

Being on a dial up for years using BT as the service provider (via freeserve) I noticed a sudden change to my ping rates, and line crackle. Is this a conspiricy due to my local exchange being upgraded to broadband? Is BT subversivly trying it on? Called BT, no reported faults, upped my 'gain' after threats of changing providers (because they said they could not do it), and now back to reported speeds of 44 - 50kbps from dropped 32-37.5. Any one else had this problem, or is it me???

when people suggest that BT is "subversivly trying it on" - why on earth would they do that?
