BT ADSL networking probs

Hi all, new to setting up adsl connections (calbe is so much easier!)
My cousin is on BT openworld & the internet connection is fine - spot on in fact. He was previously registered with Sky but this never worked & they left him with the free Netgear DG834G wireless router.
As soon as i connect router to pc & adsl to line in...internet connection fails. I have been able to get into ip address to make amendments but unable to configure router/pc to accept wireless router. I called Bt & got through to India! & they gave me a load of settings but i've no idea to change them.
PC will remain hardwired to router, when/if get it working PS3 will be running wirelessly.
These were the settings they told me to use:-
Connection type = PPPOA VCI = 38
VPI = 0 encapsulation = vcmux
moderation = g.dmt rfc = 2364
network type = wan mtu = auto/normal_1458-1500
qos = ubr
username = [email protected]
password = bt (blank or bt)
with an ip of 192.168.0.1
Can anyone give me any help...i'm getting nowhere quick & if i had any hair...i would have torn it out by now!!

You are using the free sky netgear router and trying to connect to BT BB.

I am sure with sky the username and password are flashed into the router and can't be changed.

not even with a reset? is there no way around this, is this the reason it won't connect...due to the fact Bt needs its own password/username & not sky's?
i know these are basic Q's but i'm not too hot on adsl stuff.
