Browser Hijacking

I'm having a problem using Google search in Firefox 3.6.
If I click on a suggestion I'm frequently being redirected to advertising sites - usually associated with my search but sometimes completely differnt sites appear.
I've set Firefox to refuse cookies, delete cookies and browsing history on closure and also blocked and deleted flash cookies.
Last week I even reinstalled Windows XP but to no avail.I've run AVG9, Malwarebytes,S&D and nothing suspicious has been detected.I also run CCleaner daily.
I don't appear to get this problem using Google search on other pcs or if I use a different browser (IE8).
Can anyone suggest an answer or should I just dump Firefox and use IE8 instead?

If you have any add ons in Firefox disable them and see if it runs Ok with them disabled.
If so enable them again one at a time until you find the one causing the problems.
I think the latest version is 3.8 so maybe delete the one you have and download the latest version.

Oops 3.6.8 is the latest and not 3.8 like I said sorry.
