Browser Hijackedi think

  Hangus 15:01 16 Jul 05

i think my browser has been hijacked. I am on XP and IE6. When I open my browser, another browser automatically opens as well to various sites, mostly with an adult content. My adware/spyware blocker has not detected it, but did detect something trying to change my default home page. My only option was to either accept or reject the change. i rejected it of course. How do I trace what is causing this, and how do I get rid of it? Any suggestions please?

What adware spyware are you using maybe we can suggest alternatives?

I am using McAfee Internet Security Suite.

I have also tried a system restore, but none of the restore points will work. I tried in safe mode, with no success there either.

Try posting your problem at click here if Mcafee has not detected it it s probably quite nasty.

Try a stand alone Anti Spyware, either Microsoft Anti-Spyware Beta1, ( Free ) or Ad-Aware SE from These can restore your Browser to its original status getting rid of the hijackers. I have heard McAfee is not too great.
Also check Add/Remove programs for any unwanted programs affecting IE.

How do I know which programs affect IE?

Tools -internet options- home page ---- try changing back to your normal start page. if it will not stay changed back the your hijacked.

Thanks to you all. I have downloaded a standalone anti spyware and I was amazed at how much spyware it detected on my pc. It now seems to be fine.......for now!! i thought my anti virus software with its built in spy/ad blocker was sufficient. I was obviously wrong. Thanks again everyone.
