Brother printer - streaky grey page

My Brother MFC9880 printer now puts a streaky grey background over the whole page. Is it likely that the drum needs to be replaced? I don't want to do this on the off-chance that it will solve the problem since drums are expensive. Any suggestions?

I have a HL1250 Brother and had grey pages. I found a replacement drum unit at a re-engineered type firm and installed it, same problem as before. Changed the toner refill and lo-and-behold grey pages no more. I have since heard this from another reader of PCA.

I too have a Brother HL 1250 and I aggree with Migwell. Unlikely as it seems when the toner is getting low, it "prints" oner the entire page giving you a grey background.

Thanks, guys. Looks like I've got to go get myself a toner refill.
