broadband slows my pc

whenever i am connected to broadband for more than a couple of hours, my pc starts to really slow down. Any sounds go in slow motion (mp3's and windows warning sounds for example), and it takes ages to open up a folder,or switch between windows etc.
This is particularly noticable if i leave my pc on overnight if iam doing a large download and nothing else is running.
It doesnt get any better/worse if i have loads of apps open or just internet explorer.
As soon as i disconnect however, everything is up to full speed again. But, sometimes it is a pain to get back to the site you were on so you dont always want to if you can help it.
My specs if it helps are AMD 1.3 processor, 40gb hard drive, running windows xp and 640mb of ddr ram (a 512 and a 128). i know it is not the best pc but cash is tight.
