Broadband - sending info where?

After connecting to broadband but before opening Avast and Outlook Express my compure is sending out (typically) 68 Kbs of information and receiving 43.

Who is receiving and sending and what is being sent?

Avast updates it's self as soon as you start Windows. that's the probable source

woodchip : Thanks but I forgot to mention that Kerio Personal Firewall 'asks permission' to contact the Avast server. This info is tramsmitted before the connection is made.

Yes you should allow avast. It's checking what AV dat files you have

Probably to the router and to your ISP to verify the connection. Nothing to worry about! The size of the transmission gives it away.

Thanks for your help - I was worried that my computer's security was at risk.

Why do you connect to BB before starting your AV software? Better to do it the other way round, isn't it?
