Broadband networking with windows xp

Windows XP. I have tried to share a Broadband connection by networking my laptop with my desktop system. Whilst they can talk to each other I cannot connect the laptop through my desktop (the 'master')to the internet. My moden is(BT)one that connects to the desktop via USB. All suggestions welcome without having to buy a combined broadband modem/router which are out of my reach.

I had the same difficulty before I bought a router. The problem is that the ISP only provides one address to the master PC, and your set up has to find a way to access and share this. (not a very technical explanation).
I use an ethernet modem (NTL) and a Belkin ethernet router which is very easy to set up.
