Broadband inconsistancies

I am running XP/SP2/McAfee Security suite/TalkTalk ISP.
The broadband was installed six weeks ago and ran well nigh faultlessly until my ISP installed their own equipement into my local exchange. Since then the (non peaktime) speeds have increased dramatically from a constant 2.2Meg up to anything between 4.8 to 6.1Meg. The downside is that during peaktime (say 7pm to 11pm) the broadband shows a reluctance to connect,often requiring a reboot,and even when it does connect and shows a healthy 5.8Meg it can quickly slow down to a crawl and is slower than the old dial up speed.
I have brought this to the attention of my ISP with no satisfactory reply as yet.
My question is: Is this a problem exclusive to my ISP and if so is it only their equipement at fault or could I be tweaking something at this end to try and improve matters?

Call BT and ask for a line check, also ask that they increase the gain on the line...
