whenever i try to reconnect to my broadband service (freeserve) after logging off, i get an error message saying no dial tone - and the only answer seems to be to reboot, which is becoming increasingly frustrating. i contacted freeserve technical support who suggested updating my via drivers.....anybody any thoughts on this....

I get exactly the same problem occuring (also have via chipset), usually following an unplanned disconnection (freeserve does drop the connection occasioally). As to whether it's a chipset or windows (98SE) problem I'm still not sure since apparently the problem arises because the operating system still thinks it's connected.

click here or i have also read that if you delete this key
and reinstall the drivers it works.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Modem

try the click here first though.
