Broadband connection problem

I have a desk top connected to blueyonder broad band. I have a laptop which I connected to my ethernet cable.It shows as connecting however I can not access the internet.The packets sent is very small and the received shows 0.I then connected this same lap top to blueyonder at a friends house but ONLY via their router.
Any ideas please as I have tried everything.
Please keep answers very simple!

I forgot to say that the laptop is not assigning a default gateway or DNS server number.
