Broadband CD corrupted IE on Vista

Laptop arrived yesterday with Vista home premium installed :-). Very stupidly as it appears now I put my broadband CD into the drive and waited to get to the promised land. The disc didn't display which is now obvious as it is OK for XP and Vista is set up differently. Went to Virgin site for instructions and that's when the touble began. Linked up cable but now the laptop can't launch IE or Norton or the Sony Vaio Recovery centre. It seems that the CD has modified the files somehow. I made recovery discs as stated but if I need to do this can I restore without the recovery centre?
Any help really appreciated.
