Britannica DVD wont start diff. in data/movie DVD?

I have a 1991 copy of The Encyclopaedia Britannica which I have never used on this computer. I put the "Data Disc"DVD Rom (as far as I can tell this is the only disc) into my DVD drive but it just makes a quiet grinding noise and then locks up the PC. I can play Movie DVDs in the drive and also interactive ones (eg. the Disc 2 on the Harry Potter films which are interactive).
Is there a difference between the two ? I am tryting to work out if the problem is with the drive or the DVD disc?

its the disc

If your drive plays dvd's and dvd roms (h potter interactive) then there's nothing wrong with the drive.

Is the HP one a ROM then? I ask because I have since discovered that the ROM part of the PCADVISOR DVD wont work either but the video part will. My Dad has the Britannica as well so I am going to try his out!
