both ide 1&2 on motherboard do not work

both ide 1&2 do not work on my motherboard,the hard drives do not work,when i disconnect the cable from the ide the hard drive starts up,can any one shed some light on this subject please

You can get a PCI expansion card that will give you a couple of IDE channels.

Incorrect jumper settings

Set the hard drive with the operating system on to master and plug into IDE 1 on the motherboard.

set the second HDD to slave and plug to same cable.

Set cd / DVD writer to master and plug to cable in IDE2

if yo have scond CD/DVD set as slave and plug to IDE 2 cable

sorry fruit bat but computer has been running fine for the last 18 months,one day it just wouldn't start up jumper settings not been touched,hard drives do not start until you pull the cable out of the ide socket

Check Bios setting for IDE enabled

Try a new ide cable
