Both Drives stopped working

Hi all

Windows XP with a DVD-RW and a DVD-ROM

I loaded AVG free edition last night and scanned the system, no virus found.

Tonight i went to play a dvd and it would not work, so i checked a data disc and this would not work.

Both drives have stopped working. I have uninstalled AVG and still not working.

Hi, it is unlikely that AVG is the cause, though it does get blamed for many things, unfairly, in my view.

I would first try by closing down your pc then
disconnect both drives. Re-start pc, then after a short while close down again. Then reconnect both drives, re-start pc once more and see if XP 'finds' new hardware and installs.

will try that and report back

ok it gets recognised after removing

Still no joy though

I have also found My virtual drives (Alcohol 120) are not working either, suggesting a Software fault

Any Ideas

Many thanks

Here is the solution if anyone else gets this problem

1. Make a backup first!

2. Start > Run > regedit

3. browse to:
(that last value may be different for you. Just look for the default key of "DVD/CD-ROM drives")

4. remove any key with the name "UpperFilter" or "LowerFilter"

5. reboot

My Pc must be at fault, I cannot see anything from Scarecrow Man anywhere, how did that happen. I trust that there is not a hidden help system in here somewhere.
