Boot.ini overwritten

I noticed that the boot.ini was showing in MyComputer, when I right clicked to change it to hidden, the box was greyed out.I opened it in notepad and saw that it was Windows xp media centre edition, but Ive got home edition, service pack 1, thinking this might have been why its been slower to load lately, I copied it then edited the live file back to home edition etc, then I was able to hide it as before. I searched and found that the back up in pps had also been changed. Where could this have come from and how? Would it have been affecting the boot-up performance?
