Boot.ini disappears

At irregular intervals (4-6 weeks or so) this happens for no apparent reason and I restore the file from the backup copy and all is well for some time. What causes the disappearance and more to the point, how can I stop it happening?

If you have the 'Ask toolbar' installed it is known to cause this problem. Do a google for "ask toobar boot.ini"

When using XP and a scanner I found that turning the scanner power off with the software still running on the PC the boot.ini file became corrupt. This is only one example, but I'm certain there are many more actions which will corrupt a boot.ini file.

As an aside, I eventually made an ATI backup of the file for ease of re-installation.
