Booting Up Problems with Windows XP Prof. SP2

  BigO 20:32 10 Nov 04

When switching on my p.c. the DOS boot up screen proceeds as normal as does the Windows XP introductory screen, but then the screen goes black and nothing further happens although the hard drive still seems to be working hard. The machine does however bot up in safe mode but I can't get in to XP proper.

Any ideas very gratefully received.

Many thanks.

Have you tried System Restore in Safe Mode?

I have had trouble rather like this due to a CD-RW drive being slow to respond. One of the services items checks the drives, and the AOPEN drive wasn't fast enough and was timed out. Apparently SP2 is more aggressive in this timing. A quick check is to look at Event Viewer - System. In my case there were several ATAPI errors at each boot up. A new CD-RW drive cured it.
