Booting up problem

Emailing for a friend with the following problem:

PC wont boot up, it stops at the first screen with the following lines "check system health okay... main processor: amd aflon (tm) 64 processor 3000+..... cpuid: of48..... memory testing:524288K OK " then at the bottom of the screen "press ESC to skip memory test.... pres DEL to enter SETUP/Q-flash,F9 for xpress recovery" None of these keys or any other keys on the keyboard do anything.

If he holds down ctrl+alt+del while switching the pc on, the message at the bottom reads "prepare to enter setup" but then nothing happens and no keys are responsive.

It is a dual bios system, windows XP.

NB In case this is relevant: The last time he used it the pc worked okay although but the disk clean up would not work, and prior to that he had had a virus which switched the pc off (no other details of this) he had gone into safe mode and avg had healed it.

any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Thank you!

Can he do a last good configuration in safe mode. And if he can run his Security programs while in there. If it finds anything delete it maybe run C Cleaner and if possible switch of System restore before rebooting.

Thanks for your help. Unfortunately he can't get into safe mode, tried pressing F8 but just gets the same screen...?

Sounds to me the MBR (Master Boot Record) on the hard drive has become corrupt. Quite possibly the virus caused the damage and AVG restored a version of the MBR that cannot dual boot and dosen't know where either boot record for the OS's are any more.

If keyboard not responsive then

Reset the BIOS by removing CMOS battery for a few minutes
or by using the Clear CMOS jumpe if your board is fitted (see the instruction manual for your board)
