boot windows usb

i am running windows xp pro is there anyway i can have an external hard drive eg usb one and have the os on this instead of an internal hard drive thats either ide or sata. some one told me its to do with the bios i have no usb detection in the bios i have looked

Have you checked with the manufacturers to see if there is an upgraded BIOS available for your PC as this may include the boot from USB option.
