Boot up will not complete

I use an AMD Duron 1 Ghz 5 year old desktop with XP.

Recently it had trouble with virus infections and began to freeze regularly with the indicator light on permanently. I then had to switch off to reboot. Then it started to freeze without completing the boot up.
Previously my recovery CD brought it back to normal but it has now done the same thing again but this time the Recovery CD does not get past the very first page, where the instruction to press any key does not work and the indicator light just stays on.
Any advice please?
