I was removing duplicate files from my PC with dupeguru when this error happened. I'm assuming something went wrong somewhere. When I start up I get the below message:

Windows Boot Manager

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:

    Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer.
    Choose your language settings, and then click "Next."
    Click "repair your computer."

If you don't have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.

Status: 0xc000000f

Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible.

Now, I kind of anticipated messing this up so I created a restore point just in case but I still can't get it to work.

Here's the process I went through:

Checked boot order - Ok. Start-up Repair - Failed. Load last known working config - Failed. System Restore - Failed, then cleared the restore point. Open in Safe Mode - Not showing Desktop.

It wouldn't recognize the repair Cd I had lying around so made a bootable repair on USB and tried the above options that way to no avail. I then created an installation on USB and when I go through it I can see the drives/folders etc however, if possible, I'd like to avoid a re-install.

As above, when I tried the system restore it failed and then seems to have cleared the restore point as it says I have no points available when I try to do it again.

Any thoughts? Basically want to know if there's something I haven't tried or do I just have to reinstall?

Can you get to CMD on your usb repair drive? If so try the bootrec /fixmbr command.

When you booted into Safe mode with Networking, did you get a Taskbar and Start Button? Or whole screen is blank except for Safe Mode logo in the corners?

Try Ctrl-Alt-Del for Task Manager. Right click Explorer entry and end it if running. Click File/New task Explorer.exe

See if icons appear (or taskbar)

Or from Task Manager, File/New netplwiz

Do you get this

If so, click the checkbox and add a new user (Make Admin in Properties).

Reboot and see if new account boots.

If so, you can run setup.exe from the W7 USB drive and do a Repair Install/In-place Upgrade.

If it does come to new install from booting USB, don't format C: and see if you get a Windows.old.

Removing the hard drive and connecting to another computer to backup first would be preferable though.

Or you could make another partition on hard drive and install to that. The old C would then be still there.

Or you could make an Ubuntu Live CD (on a working computer) and backup from that before a clean W7 install.

Yea, when I logged into safe mode it was just a black screen with the logo's in the corners; I couldn't ctrl+alt+del when in it though.

I tried to go into safe mode again to try the suggestions above but now it's just throwing me back to the Boot Manager screen again.

I tried all the cmd's in the above link but still no luck so I think I will probably just have to reinstall.

I have all my important stuff on a second hard drive anyway so I shouldn't really be losing much in doing a fresh install, it's just the inconvenience I was trying to avoid....

Boot from the windows 7 DVD and do a restore

How you access the repair options will depend upon whether you have a Windows installation disk or whether your operating system came pre-installed by your PC manufacturer.

Pre-Installed

If no repair options are available your PC manufacturer may have replaced the tools or customised them. Check your Computer Manual before proceeding as another key may be needed to access the Repair/recovery options.

  1. Start your PC

  2. If your PC has one operating system Press and Hold the F8 key as your PC starts. If the Windows Logo appear you will need to start again

  3. If you have a dual boot system a Boot option menu will appear. Highlight the Windows operating system and Press the F8 key

  4. An Advanced Tools menu options screen will now appear

  5. Highlight the repair Your Computer option and Press Enter

  6. Select a keyboard layout, and then Click the Next button

  7. Next select your user Name and Enter your Password, then Click OK

  8. The recovery options should now appear

Windows Installation Disk

NOTE

Make sure your PC is set to boot directly from the Windows DVD, most modern PCs are set this way. With older machines you may need to check the PC's BIOS

  1. Start the PC

  2. Immediately insert the Windows DVD into the DVD drive

  3. A Black screen will appear with the words 'Press any key to boot from CD or DVD', Press Any key to start the booting process

  4. The 'Windows is loading files' screen will now appear with a progress bar.

  5. After a few minutes the Microsoft copyright window ill appear and another small progress bar will be visible

  6. You will next see a Blue curtained screen

  7. Next the Language option screen will appear Select your language and keyboard language and the Click the Next button

  8. At the bottom left of the next screen - the Install screen, Click on the Repair Your Computer option

  9. The System recovery options will now search for your Windows installation

  10. Once the Windows installation has been located, Highlight it and then Click the Next button

  11. The set of recovery options now appears, Click on the Option you require and follow the on screen prompts

Repair / Recovery Options

  • Startup repair - This automatically fixes problems that are preventing Windows from starting
  • System Restore - This will Restore Windows to an earlier point in time
  • Windows Complete PC Restore (Available in Windows Vista Business, Enterprise and Ultimate editions only)- If you don't have a backup then don't use this option This will completely restore your entire PC - programs, system settings and files - from the back up that you have previously created. Any other data will be lost
  • Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool - This checks your computer's memory hardware for errors
  • Command Prompt - This opens a Command Window

Have you tried the "Start up Repair" option, run it a few times if fails on the first attempt.

If access is via a UEFI-enabled computer with a Windows 7 (or higher) x64,

The file bootmgfw.efi can also be extracted from a Windows 7 (or higher) x64 - DVD. It is located in the 2.7 GByte large archive Install.wim in the subdirectory \sources. The archive can be extracted with an archiving program. This file is located in the subdirectory "1" of the archive at 1\Windows\Boot\EFI.

Copy it to the stick in the \EFI\BOOT\ folder and rename this file BOOTX64.EFI (notice the reverse order of efi and boot)

copy it from the stick to the C:\Windows\Boot\EFI folder on the affected machine
