missing ntdl message is displayed and system will not boot.
put in system disk into drive and it will boot if i don/t press any key.

Question can i use the disk to repair the fault WITHOUT affecting my system and programs already installed. i know a backup is recommended but some of the programs are old and i don't have the installation disks any more.

Do you have 2 or more hard drives?
if so, Go into the BIOS and check the priorty to boot is correct, as sometimes the boot order will change for no apparant reason (that I can see).

If this is the problem correcting this will cure the problem.
