A friend of mine had her computer virus-emptied recently and the computer technician is now on holiday. She's got XP loaded but when they boot up, Windows hangs on the Desktop page and the busy symbol just keeps showing busy. No icons load nor the any Bars nor the Start button. Any ideas gratefully appreciated.

Try Starting in Safe Mode and check if he created a new Restore Point. So you can try Restoring it

Please remind me how to start in Safe Mode.

Just keep tapping F8 as the computer starts.

Then in Safe Mode you should find Restore under Security in Control Panel or look under Programs\Accessories\Tools\System Restore Tool look for a bold date
