Boot problem

Hi, Just installed a second hand Mobo with my XP3200 chip and a new 520W trust power supply. I have put in one stick of Ram and video card. When I try to power up the CPU fan comes alive for about 15 secs then the power supply switches off. The Mobo has in addition to the normal power supply the 4 pin 12v ATX connection.

The Mobo is about 3 years old could this modern new power supply be in compatable? Or can anyone suggest anything else. I have tried the Mobo out of the case on a piece of wood and also in the case. I have tried running with just the CPU, fan and power supply.

Hi, are you sure that the mobo is in fact a good working board?

This is the 2nd Mobo that I have bought and the same problem exisis on both. You can never be entirely sure that the board is good but I'm fairly confident that they are OK.

15 secs then the power supply switches off

Overheat problem?

HAve you cleaned off the old and applied new thermal paste to the chip and heatsink?

Yes sounds like a distinct possibility. I'll try some fresh paste and perhaps a new chip and let you know the outcome. Thanks.

Problem solved - Cleaned the CPU and cooler with Artic solution 1&2. applied a good helping of Artic 3 thermal paste and now stable.

Thanks for the tip.
