POST sequence completes OK. Screen shows normal sign-on text and memory counter. POST single 'beep' OK.
Then screen goes blank and computer goes no further. Sometimes writes one or two lines of text on screen. Won't get as far as trying to boot from a floppy. No error 'beeps'.

Cannot enter BIOS. Battery checked OK. All chips, boards, plugs, memory etc. seated OK.
Any suggestions what to try next please.

Athlon 1.6G, 80Gb HDD, 512Mb RAM, Win 98. Computer about 3 years old and been running fine until now. Haven't just installed anything new.

seems like you have covered most things already, but here goes

Try booting with a windows98 start-up disk in the floppy drive. (you will have to set bios to boot A: first (if you get as far as the "press del to enter setup" or whatever yours is). if you dont get this far then try resetting the CMOS either by powering down and placing the jumper over the clear cmos pins for a few seconds then replace in the normal position and try again, or by removing the cmos battery, leave out for a few seconds then replace.

only other thing is to remove the IDE cables from the Motherboard and try to boot again, it could be a dead hard/floppy/cdrom drive that is stopping the boot.

good luck

Turned out to be a U/S internal modem - must have dragged one of the data lines down or something. Removed it and all is now back to normal.

Thanks to paperman27 for responding.
