anything in the startup folder or msconfig that could be a bottleneck?

I have seen many variations re screens on bootup. I have a grey/black screen (varies between 5 & 15 seconds) between Win XP Logo screen and User Logon screen. I have seen PCs with blue screens - same Win version with varying screen aspects!!

Microsoft state a reasonable time from switching on and arriving at desktop should be around 30 seconds - this is with all Win default programmes in Startup Folder set to start at bootup.
